Description
A Barred Owl (Strix varia) prepares to make its characteristic "Who cooks for you?" call. This was one of those really memorable photographic outings. Although I have often heard barred owls calling on our rural property, they have always been very reclusive and never responded to my feeble attempts to mimic their calls until this day, when this owl developed an interest in me and landed less than 40 feet away. It then allowed me to walk around and photograph it for nearly a half hour and slowly close the gap while finding a viewpoint that was unobstructed by branches. Finally, it started to call its neighbors, which involved a very elaborate flapping of wings and fluffing of its feathers before it uttered a sound. This photo was taken just as it began its call.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I am an opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer to capture the spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring, and rarely photograph staged subjects other than portraits. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I continue to study and learn the craft. Long ago, I embraced the hugely expanded opportunities offered by digital photography, but I have only been posting them online since September 2012. As a result, I have now successfully sold several of my works. I will continue to post my very best works on FAA and other sites every day or two, as time permits. Please revisit my sites periodically. I welcome your votes, support and gently constructive criticism or suggestions, all of which help guide me in my photographic odyssey. Nothing makes me happier as a photographer than knowing someone likes one of my works so much that they purchased one.

Gary Holmes replied:
Thanks again, Christopher. We went back out last weekend and the same owl came to visit, but was so silent I didn't notice until it flew away.
