Soon after we headed down the Grove of the Patriarchs trail in the southeastern portion of Mount Rainier National Park, we were greeted by this pika (Ochotona princeps) that wandered into the middle of the trail. It did not appear to be mooching for food, but it should have been a national park employee. It posed for half a minute or so before retreating slowly to its den underneath a nearby boulder.
