A mother Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) raises her wing to shelter her fledgling chick at a small lake near our house. Two others were already hidden from view under her wings, with only part of a leg sticking out from under the right wing. As I observed them, they would wander several meters away on their wobbly legs before randomly heading back to shelter for a few minutes. The killdeer is one of the most commonly seen plovers in the US, and can be found nesting in a wide variety of locations within close proximity to human activity. If not seen, they are easily identified by their remarkably loud, vociferous calls (hence the species name).

Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's.
