Description
A male Ruby-Crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula) flashes his ruby-crown on a tree branch while overwintering in central Texas. These are among the smallest migratory songbirds in North America, averaging about 10 cm, or 4 inches in total length, but they are quite territorial and very curious. While other birds fly away from the camera, they may approach fairly closely to investigate. They are also quite peripatetic, and rarely stay more than a few seconds in one place, making them challenging to capture before they fly off to another location. The red crown is usually hidden from view, but is displayed when agitated or impressing a female. This one demonstrates how his cover feathers are moved to each side to show the crown feathers. Their range extends from breeding grounds in northwest Canada and Alaska to wintering areas in the southern US and into Mexico.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. Although I have staged single and group portraits and still life photographs, I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's. I have successfully sold a number of my photographs on Fine Art America, and have won several awards, including an Editors' Choice on 500px, as well as a 5-star Editor's Choice designation in Camerapixo's Hot Shots photo magazine, Volume 4.
