Description
I had never heard of a Black-Throated Magpie-Jay (Calicitta formosa colliei) until I visited the Tijuana River reserve. This very large (3 feet or so total length), very noisy and very curious bird buzzed within a few feet of my head before landing, and at least 5 others were in other nearby trees. These are native to forests of southern and central Mexico, but a colony have been living in the Tijuana River estuary for several years, and are thought to have escaped from captivity in Tijuana, Mexico.
