A Broad-winged Skipper (Poanes viator) dropped in during a macro photo sesssion with a passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) that was blooming in our yard. It searched around the flower for several minutes, probing repeatedly as if it could not figure out where to find the nectar in this highly complex flower. The actual diameter of the flower, including tendrils, is about three inches. The plants were given the name Passionflower or Passion vine because the floral parts were once said to represent aspects of the Christian crucifixion story, sometimes referred to as the Passion. The 10 petal-like parts represent Jesus' disciples, excluding Peter and Judas; the 5 stamens the wounds Jesus received; the three knob-like stigmas the nails; the fringe the crown of thorns. Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's.
