Hundreds of vivid yellow succulent blossoms, backlit by mid-morning sun, grace a large field of prickly pear cactus at Union Grove Wildlife Management Area. The blooming season is the only time of the year when I would have any interest in picking my way through this risky field. I paid a price for this shot, and was pulling out dozens of tiny yellow spines from my legs and feet the rest of the day today. Fortunately, the thousands of bees buzzing around these flowers left me alone.
