Description
Detecting movement in the deep grass, a Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) swoops slowly and attentively across a marshy pasture in Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Texas. Another three harriers were cruising the same field, but this one chose to fly straight toward me for this photo. Also known as marsh hawks, these streamlined hawks are fairly common in open prairies and marshes throughout the lower U.S. and most of Canada and Alaska, patrolling just above the tallest plants and acrobatically twisting to descend on their prey. Their characteristic white bar at the base of the tail can be seen even at long distances, aiding in identification.
