This White-Tailed Kite raised a few hairs on my neck as it flew silently overhead. These elegant birds are predominantly white, making them stand out from the majority of raptors, but their elongated black eye spots give them a somewhat otherworldly or spooky appearance even from a distance. These are infrequently seen birds, despite their fairly large size, but they tend to stand out when perched on top of a dead tree or telephone pole. All that I have observed were clearly in mated pairs that remain fairly close whether perched or in flight. They commonly hover fairly high off the ground as they hunt for food, then swoop rapidly down with wings held high to grab their prey. I have seen them hunt both for small land animals as well as fish. They typically reside year-round along the Texas Gulf coast, northern Mexico and up the Pacific coast to Washington state.

I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's.
