Artist's Description

Here are the internal workings of a Wine Cup (Callirhoe involucrata) blossom, as seen in an ultra-closeup capture. Wine Cups are members of the mallow family. The 2 inch wide blooms are intensely burgundy to purple in color, resembling a glass of Beaujolais. They are usually seen in fairly small numbers during spring in Texas, occasionally in dense clumps. The flowers close each evening and remain permanently shut after polination. The shot was taken using a very wide angle lens and an extension tube, handheld, on a roadside. The front of the lens was pressing on the petals at the bottom. Depth of field is about 2 or 3 mm. I focused on one of the bean-shaped anthers. Taken near Port Sullivan, Texas.

About Gary Holmes

Gary Holmes

Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's. I have successfully sold a number of my photographs on Fine Art America, and have been recognized in international photography venues. Poster sized prints of three of my photographs were recently installed in a new medical clinic building in a major Texas medical center. My photo, "Blue Norther," was selected by the nonprofit Texas Bluebird Society for its 2010...
