An old paver brick made by the D'Hanis Brick and Tile Company proudly advertises its heritage on a sidewalk in downtown Fredericksburg, Texas as it shelters a small Oxalis plant that resembles clover. Its history is reflective of the early days of the settlement of Texas. Fredericksburg was established in the hill country of Texas by groups of German settlers. D'Hanis, the tiny town that has been the home of D'Hanis Brick and Tile Company, is west of San Antonio, Texas, and was settled by Alsatian settlers through the land impresario, Henri Castro. The company was founded in 1883 after the discovery of a large supply of very high quality clay nearby. It remains in operation, still making dry-pressed tile and bricks similar to this one by hand, as well as many other products. Its bricks are considered some of the best in the southern United States, and can be found in many buildings and sidewalks throughout Texas and the south central states. Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's. I have successfully sold a number of my photographs on Fine Art America, and have been recognized in international photography venues. Poster sized prints of three of my photographs were recently installed in a new medical clinic building in a major Texas medical center.
