Description
I was taking pics of a Monarch butterfly on our milkweed, and noticed it was in a standoff with a large orange bug. It somewhat resembled a giant aphid, but was actively eating actual aphids that were swarming the blooms. I looked it up, and I believe it is a nymph form of an orange, or milkweed, assassin bug. Who knew that milkweeds have their own assassins? The monarch was apparently above its weight class, so the bug moved on. Assassin bugs are considered beneficial in the garden, until they bite you on the hand and cause you a great deal of pain. Then you may rethink their cost to benefit ratio.
