Description
A Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) took a dive off its perch on a power line. These entertaining birds announce themselves with a loud chatter as they fly, perch high above any source of surface water, and make spectacular dives to catch their meals. They are difficult to photograph because they are wary of humans, but maintaining a position near where one has been observed may result in a fairly close encounter as it returns to a favorite fishing spot. Their stocky build, white and gray bands (belts) across the neck, and markedly long beak make them readily identifiable from a distance. They are found nearly year-round throughout North America, migrating south only from Canada and the northern US into the southern US and Mexico.
