Description
This was the best of my captures of the beautiful blood moon during the total lunar eclipse last night. Its bright orange-red color contrasted nicely with the blue of Spica in the lower right corner, and with two smaller stars less than one lunar diameter away at 3:00 and about 4:30 relative to the lunar disk. I couldn't help thinking of the great Creedence song as I watched it, considering that the blood moon was often considered a bad omen in less enlightened times.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I am an opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer to capture the spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring, and rarely photograph staged subjects other than portraits. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I continue to study and learn the craft. Long ago, I embraced the hugely expanded opportunities offered by digital photography, but I have only been posting them online since September 2012. As a result, I have now successfully sold several of my works. I will continue to post my very best works on FAA and other sites every day or two, as time permits. Please revisit my sites periodically.

Nice work, Gary! I too took a photo shot of this but with my lowly Nikon 3100 with an 18-55mm lens. I was able to get a descent capture small! Next time...
Gary Holmes replied:
Thanks, Allison. Taking night shots is very tricky, and some cameras handle it better than others. Get a tripod and cable release, and you will notice a significant improvement in image quality. Even with those, this was the best I could get that night. I suspect partly due to the humidity in the air. Keep at it.
