Description
A female Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) perches in a blooming chinaberry tree on a private ranch near Belton, Texas, during a field trip of the Twin Lakes Audubon Society. Her partner was out of range in another tree.
The Chinaberry is a native of Asia that was imported into the US in the mid-1800s as a fast-growing decorative tree, and its blooms are beautiful and fragrant. Unfortunately, it is highly invasive and has become a major nuisance tree. According to the Texas Invasives Database (http://www.texasinvasives.org/plant_database/detail.php?symbol=MEAZ), It outcompetes native vegetation due to its high relative resistance to insects and pathogens. Its leaf litter raises soil pH, thus altering soil conditions for native plants and seed germination. It is a very fast growing tree that reaches 18 - 24 feet in height in 4 - 5 years, and may reach 50 - 60 feet in total height. It reproduces on-site primarily from root sprouts, and over longer distances via bird-dispersed seeds.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. Although I have staged single and group portraits and still life photographs, I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's. I have successfully sold a number of my photographs on Fine Art America, and have won several awards, including an Editors' Choice on 500px, as well as a 5-star Editor's Choice designation in Camerapixo's Hot Shots photo magazine, Volume 4. (http://issuu.com/camerapixo/docs/hotshots-camerapixo-04/1). My photo, "Blue Norther," was selected by the nonprofit Texas Bluebird Society for its 2010 membership announcements.
