Description
A male Dickcissel (Spiza americana) perches on a dead flower stalk, on the edge of a green field of wheat. These sparrow-sized birds are often mistaken for sparrows until they flash their yellow chests in the sun. They make me think of a cross between a sparrow and a meadowlark, with their showy black and white markings. They were singing constantly in this field, allowing me to capture a number of excellent quality images. More will be appearing.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I am an opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer to capture the spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring, and rarely photograph staged subjects other than portraits. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I continue to study and learn the craft. Long ago, I embraced the hugely expanded opportunities offered by digital photography, but I have only been posting them online since September 2012. As a result, I have now successfully sold several of my works.
