Description
Now that it is finally starting to get cooler, our passion vine (Passiflora incarnata) has started to bloom more regularly. The flowers are some of the most amazing botanical creations I have ever seen. The actual diameter of the flower, including tendrils, is about three inches. The plants were given the name Passionflower or Passion vine because the floral parts were thought to represent aspects of the Christian crucifixion story, or the Passion. The 10 petals and sepals represent Jesus' disciples, not including Peter and Judas; the 5 stamens represent the wounds Jesus received; the three knob-like stigmas resemble the nails; the fringed corona suggests the crown of thorns.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I am an opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer to capture the spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring, and rarely photograph staged subjects other than portraits. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I have only been posting them for others to see since about September 2012.
