A shadowy figure observes the filling of a hot air balloon at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in October 2013. He eventually realizes that what appears to be one balloon are actually two separate balloons, through subtle differences in colors, patterns and textures of the fabrics. The Albuquerque balloon fiesta is a feast for photographers, with ready access to the balloon launch areas. Juxtapositions of bold colors and patterns like this are in abundance, waiting for an observant eye.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. Although I have staged single and group portraits and still life photographs, I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's....
