Description
A beaver (Castor canadensis) gathers aquatic plants from the center of a pond to stock its burrow near the western shore of Lake Yellowstone, in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The burrow turned out to be right in front of me on the bank. Several beavers were diligently working this pond on Gull Drive in the middle of the morning in September. All were gathering moss and returning it to their burrows, unconcerned by the humans on the bank. Beavers are herbivorous, and will eat a variety of aquatic plants during the growing season, often storing them underwater near their burrows or lodges for eating later. I really liked the leading lines of the ripples reflecting the blue sky as it swam toward me.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. Although I have staged single and group portraits and still life photographs, I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's. I have continued to develop my compositional and post-processing skills and have slowly acquired higher quality equipment that is now capable of putting those skills to their best use. I finally became confident enough to begin posting my work online in September 2012, and have successfully sold a number of my photographs on Fine Art America.
