Description
A flock of Cedar Waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) typically blows through our neighborhood about this time each year, devouring the large purple berries from several large Japanese privets, and they just reappeared this weekend. These are some of my most favorite North American birds, because of their elegant coloring, their sleek appearance, and the remarkably smooth feathers that actually make them appear almost unreal. They are also quite entertaining, often craning their necks and perching on twigs that cannot hold their weight in order to reach what must be the most perfect fruits, when thousands are much easier to reach nearby. This one felt that the premium crop was at the end of this small branch, which bent over from the bird's weight.
Gary Holmes is an advanced amateur, opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I have only started posting them for others to see in the past 6 months. I have had sufficient encouragement from posts on other sites to try putting some up for sale on FAA. Please see my larger collection of posts at http://500px.com/holmesidepi. I plan to progressively start posting the best of those on FAA over the next few months.

Thanks, Angela. Actually, I was not pleased with the focus, but its precarious positioning of the bird convinced me to post it. They really are astoundingly beautiful birds, although their call resembles an old policeman's whistle and becomes really deafening when they come in large numbers.
