As if the field of yellow flowers was not enough, I saw my first Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher (Tyrannus forficatus) of the season, a sure sign of the coming of spring in central Texas. These entertaining birds perform amazing aerobatic displays while catching flying insects, thanks in part to their long split tails. They are common adornments along roadside barbed-wire fences during the spring and summer, as they rest between hunting forays. They prefer open fields, like this one, to allow for unrestricted flight. This male displays part of his spectacular deep rose coloring of the breast, flanks and under-wing areas. I was fortunate to have a train appear during my shooting session, which produced a darkened background.

Poster sized prints of three of my photographs were recently installed in a new medical clinic building in a major Texas medical center. My photo, "Blue Norther," was selected by the nonprofit Texas Bluebird Society for its 2010...

An outstanding image Gary. I was drawn to this one above all others while looking through your thumbs. I have a theory that if an image reads well as a thumb, it usually is strong enough to make a larger image pop. This one does all of that. voted, favorite
