Artist's Description
Bold tree shadows interrupt the golden sunset glow on the old mission church of San Francisco de Asis, in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico. This church was built around 1815 on the old Santa Fe Trail, facing away from what is now the main highway and thus not noticed my most passersby. It is considered to be one of the most photographed churches in the world, primarily because of the unique structure of its back and sides. Its images are among the works of Ansel Adams, Paul Strand, and many others, and it has been a favorite painting subject of Georgia O'Keeffe and other well-known artists (http://www.cartermuseum.org/Inspiring_Visions/OKeeffe/okeeffe_art.html). Judging from some of these older images, its massive adobe walls, rounded buttresses and organic shape have changed somewhat over time, as its outer adobe facade has been worn away by the elements and reworked by adobe masons over its nearly 200 year existence. Gary Holmes, photographer: I have always loved to photograph nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer the challenge of trying to capture the unpredictable spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring. I started with a Kodak Brownie as a child, but entered the world of real photography with a Canon AE-1 in the late 1970's. I have successfully sold a number of my photographs on Fine Art America, and have been recognized in international photography venues.
