Description
A remnant of a volcanic porphyritic extrusion dike eclipses the afternoon sun, in the Cerrillos Hills near New Mexico Highway 14, between Cerrillos and Santa Fe. The larger dike in the background is about 15 feet thick, and runs for several hundred yards on each side of the highway. The tortured surfaces of the dikes attest to their molten origins as they extruded through cracks in the surface rocks, and provides ample shelter for birds and small animals. Porphyry describes igneous rocks of mixed particle size, indicating that some portions cooled faster than others. The faster the cooling, the finer the particle grains.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I am an opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer to capture the spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring, and rarely photograph staged subjects other than portraits. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I have only been posting them for others to see since about September 2012. Although I will continue to post on 500px, I have begun to focus upon my site (gary-holmes.artistwebsites.com) on Fine Art America, which offers a wider range of printing and mounting options not currently available on 500px. As a result, I have now successfully sold several of my works.

great idea! really cool effect and probably tricky to get the exposure right. well done!
Gary Holmes replied:
Thanks, Christopher. One of the joys of using HDR for high contrast shots. Lots of creative options.
