Description
3/4 posed portrait of a young male Black-Chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) as it sat at our feeder in mid-morning light. The copper-orange iridenscence of its black bib contrasts with the red glow from the feeder that highlights its white belly. In less intense light, the entire front and sides of the neck are as black as its head, which allows the bird to remain undetected when it rests in vegetation. The entire bird is no more than 3 inches long from beak tip to tail.

Gary Holmes, photographer: I am an opportunist photographer of nature, landscapes, abstract, and other found objects of interest. I prefer to capture the spontaneity of things and events as they are occurring, and rarely photograph staged subjects other than portraits. Although I have been a photographer for decades, I have only been posting them for others to see since about September 2012.
